Evaluating the Market for Andy Warhol’s Mao Paintings
Between 2004 and 2023
Andy Warhol (1928-1987), also known as the “Pope of Pop Art”, is widely regarded as the preeminent American painter of the modern era and even as one of the two defining figures of 20th-century Western art, alongside Pablo Picasso.
Current record-holder of the second most expensive artwork ever sold at auction, with his Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964) sold for $195 million in 2022, Warhol’s predominance on the art market is undeniable.
His other instantly recognizable portrait is his interpretation of Mao’s picture from the “Little Red Book”, a series that totalized $331 million in revenue (in inflation-adjusted prices) at auction between 2004 and 2023.
ArtExplored’s latest Focus Report delves into the market for these specific works that have impressive sell-through rate sale.
