Bedroom in Arles, 1888

About the painting

Of all the iconic paintings Van Gogh created while he was living in southern France, Bedroom in Arles is one of the most celebrated. The composition, which comprises simple furniture and a sharply receding perspective, was painted after the Dutch artist was rooted to his bed for almost three days following an episode of exhaustion brought on by enthusiastically decorating his rented “yellow house,” including painting a series of canvases to hang on the walls.
