The Last Supper, 1495-1498
To recreate the biblical scene, Da Vinci applied oil paint to plaster in a technique known as fresco-secco, allowing him to achieve remarkable detail, in what is one of the world's most iconic artworks.
Duration: 2 min 35s
Jesus has just told his apostles that one of them will betray him – as a result, the painting is charged with emotion. Their faces are frozen in disbelief, anger, and astonishment, while Jesus remains a picture of calm in the centre of the pyramidal composition that Leonardo da Vinci used to create a sense of balance. In The Last Supper (1495-1498), the artist’s mastery of perspective is clear; powerful geometric lines give the scene structure and react with the mural’s setting, the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan.
