The Virgin and the Child Saint Anne, 1503-1519

The Virgin and the Child Saint Anne, 1503-1519

About the painting

The three generations of the Holy Family are portrayed in the painting – St. Anne is holding her daughter Mary on her lap, who is reaching down to the baby Jesus while they look tenderly into each other’s eyes. Their gaze forms a diagonal that unifies the juxtaposition of their bodies within a pyramidal composition, which Leonardo da Vinci employed so often.
