About the painting

The painting demonstrates Van Gogh’s signature impressionist style; the bright, colourful windows are set against the blue sky, which seems to bealive with movement. The horizontal and vertical lines contrast each other to create an image that is both static and very much alive. The viewer’s gaze is drawn to the wide perspective of Paris – a composition that borrows stylistically from Pointillism, made up of dabs of paint to create depth and richness of colour.
